Die Qual der Wahl bei Mietautos

Am Anfang einer jeden Reise steht, nachdem man sich entschieden hat, dass es ein Mietauto sein soll, welches es denn nun sein soll. Diese Entscheidung ist nicht immer einfach und man sollte ein paar Punkte beachten bevor man seine endgültige Wahl trifft. Jeder der das erste Mal ein Mietauto auswählt wird Fehler machen und so ist es auch uns ergangen. Hier wollen wir die vier wichtigsten Punkte auflisten, damit die Wahl für euch bei der nächsten Reise ein bisschen einfacher fällt.
1) Welcher Reisende bist du?Bevor man sich für ein Mietauto entscheidet, sollte man herausfinden wie man Reisen möchte und welche Abenteuer man auf dieser Reise erleben will. Wenn man einfach nur von Stadt zu Stadt fahren möchte und die Sehenswürdigkeiten bestauen, dann reicht ein handelsübliches Auto völlig aus. Möchte man aber ein bisschen abseits der üblichen Pisten unterwegs sein - so wie wir es meistens tun - ist die Auswahl sehr schnell eingeschränkt.
2) Schau dir das Land und die Straßen deiner Reise genau an
Um das Beste Mietauto für deine geplante Reise auswählen zu können ist es unerlässlich, sich das Straßennetzwerk und die Beschaffenheit davon genau anzusehen. Wie wir das südliche Afrika bereist haben, war sehr schnell klar, dass die Straßenverhältnisse über eine längere Zeit eher ... bescheiden sein werden. Somit war hier schnell klar, dass ein Allrad getriebens Fahrzeug unumgänglich ist.
3) Mach dich mit lokal verfügbaren Autos vertraut Je nachdem wo man hinreist kann die Verfügbarkeit von verschiedenen Autotypen und Automarken sehr unterschiedlich sein. Hier ist es auch entscheidend im Vorfeld genau zu recherchieren wie sich der Automarkt im jeweiligen Land gestaltet und welche Autos überhaupt von Vermietern angeboten werden. Zum Beispiel findet man in Südafrika viele Autos der Marken Land Rover, Toyota, usw., in den USA wird man hingegen eher Autos von Jeep oder Dodge finden.
4) Die Qual der Wahl
Weiß man dann wie die Reise aussehen soll und welcher Untergrund befahren wird, kommt es zur tatsächlichen Auswahl des Autos. Für uns gibt es immer ein entscheidendes Kriterium - der Allrad Antrieb. Somit haben wir uns die Sachen schon recht leicht gemacht, da viele Autos auf dem Markt gleich wegfallen. Mit dem Allried Antrieb war für uns auch immer die Untersetzung sehr wichtig, die Differentialsperren waren ein nettes Extra, aber vorallem bei unserer ersten Reise nicht entscheidend.
Man sollte auch unbedingt die Bodenfreiheit des Autos beachten. Hier macht sich die Rechere über Straßenbedingunge wieder bezahlt, weiß man in wie gutem oder schelchtem Zustand die Straßen sind, weiß man auch wie viel Bodenfreiheit sinnvoll oder notwendig ist.
Bei der Auswahl des Autos sollte auch die ungefähre Route der Reise schon feststehen. Deshalb ist es auch die Reichweite des Autos zu beachten. Wie viele Tanks hat das Auto, wie weit reicht der Sprit und gibt es Ersatzkanister? Nichts ist ärgerlicher als mitten in den Weiten der Kalahari mit fast leerem Tank zu enden.

At the very beginning of each journey we did so far stands the decision which car would be the best for us. This decision is not the easiest one and there are several points you have to take care of before you should rent one. Everyone, who does this for the first time will - for sure - make some mistakes and so did we. Now we would like to give you with a little guide how to find a suitable car for your next trip.
1.) Know wich kind of traveller you want to be
Before you look for a car you would like to rent, you have to listen to yourself and make sure, which kind of adventure you want to make. If you want to travel from city to city and take a look at the sights of each, a normal car will do. As we are not doing this kind of travelling - as we already mentioned in our first post - the diversity of cars for us is not that big in most cases.
2.) Take a close look at the country you want to visit
For the best choice of your car you have to be familiar with the road network of the country you will visit. In the countries we visited the road conditions were quite poor for a long time. So it was essential to rent a 4x4 vehicle with good clearence.
3.) Be familiar with local cars
The choice of the cars you can rent in different countries you want to visit will be limited by the cars which are available at the local car market. So you have to know which cars are common in each country. For example in South Africa there will be lots of car brands like Land Rover, Toyota, etc. available. In America there will - of course - mostly be american brands like Jeep, Dodge, etc.
4.) The actual choice of the car
For us, there are some points a car for an overland adventure has to have. If the car does not have a 4x4 powertrain, we do not even consider to rent it.
With the 4x4 powertrain a low range gearbox is inalienable too. Differential lockers are a nice extra, if you want go off the road as well.
Very importend is the clearence of your car of choice. If you have very rough roads with lots of potholes, steep slopes and maybe river crossings it is absolutely necessary to have a good clearance.
Furthermore the fuel consumption and the range have to be considered, because a high fuel consumption is always connected to higher fuel costs of your journey. Another point might be, that fuel stations may not always be where needed. So a extra fuel tank or a pair of jerrycans might be helpful as well.
One of the last points you should think of are the tyres the car comes with. We did make the mistake to trust into no name tyres at one of our trips and bitterly regretted this after we had to change the tyres 6 times in 4 weeks.
Take a close look at the tyres of the car, it well save you a lot of time and trouble.
